Standard Curriculum

Our curriculum is customized for every student!  We use The North Carolina Standard Course of Study objectives, university requirements, and the interest of the student to create a customized educational plan (CEP).  We offer core classes Monday through Thursday.  Fridays are dedicated to exhibitions, research, field trips, interviews off campus, projects, unfinished work and/or time to meet with advisors.

While we refer to the objectives of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, our teachers collaborate with their students to develop the CEP using many opportunities to enrich the learning experience. Each class syllabus lists objectives and books or materials needed for class.  Students gather additional materials needed for projects, plan field trips, conduct interviews and any other information gathering method to help them accomplish their learning goals. Textbooks are used as a collaborative tool or resource rather than the focal point of the learning experience.

The emphasis is not on memorization, but in problem solving, critical thinking, and learning to gather information needed to research topics that are of special interest to the student.  The traditional subject areas will naturally be used as the teacher guides the student to go in depth about finding answers and putting it together for an exhibition or “knowledge recital.”  This means of sharing knowledge is an excellent way to showcase what was learned.  It is an instrument for assessment too!  Assessment that is both formative and summative, two valuable ways to measure one’s achievement.

*Students in Middle school are eligible to earn high school credit for Math and Foreign Language.

*Students in High School are eligible to earn college credit from UNCG's i-school in 11/12th grade.

Hybrid Curriculum

The hybrid curriculum is designed for the homeschooled student whose family would like a collaborative social and educational experience for their teen student.  Core subject area teachers meet with students one day per week as a consultant/tutor. This could be for the family looking to transition from homeschooling to RPS, but may not be financially ready for the Standard Program tuition or schedule OR the family who is committed to homeschooling and would benefit from the input of a teaching professional's consultation, advice and or suggestion for enrichment in the core subject area OR the family who would like to leave public school, is considering homeschooling, but is overwhelmed by the process.

Please call for addtional information.

THE HOME SCHOOL FAMILY IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ADMINISTERING CORE SUBJECT INSTRUCTION as pursuant to the laws governing Homeschooling as set by the DNPE.   Please also see the section called Homeschool Enrichment for electives offered after 1:30pm.

Sustainability

An Inconvenient Truth?

Sustainability isn't only about environmental issues:  global warming, recycling or driving a hybrid or a bio-diesel fueled vehicle.

It’s about living in the world conscious of the decisions and impact we make on a daily basis.  Being sustainable means we must have an understanding of economics, environment, technology, society and ourselves and apply that knowledge on a daily basis in all areas of our lives.

Whole, healthy people are educated, life-long learners who value and respect others and work together toward this common goal.  Striving for and living this truth to preserve and nurture our world is no longer a choice but a civic duty.

At RPS we know that our students must have the knowledge and proficiency to be effective leaders and agents of change in the following areas:

             PEOPLE – self and society

ECONOMICS – the financial relationship on self and society, both locally and globally

TECHNOLOGY – improving conditions in the world for preservation and quality of life

ENVIRONMENT –  understanding, sharing and preserving the wealth of the world’s resources

If the goal of sustainability in business is to create environmentally, economically, and socially healthy business practices, as educators it is paramount that we explore sustainability with the stewards of tomorrow – our children.

Sustainability is a core curriculum subject at RPS.

We share the mission with other local, like-minded organizations by partnering and offering classes, workshops, outreach programs, and volunteer opportunities for our students and community at large.

The bottom line:

Today's world charges students to be resourceful, informed, technologically savvy, and experienced in how to find the information they need to answer burning questions, communicate information in a variety of ways, and solve social, economical, and environmental issues.
